In the present many people use social media through smartphones, laptops, or both. This has helped people around the world to communicate with others and know about events in other parts of the world in a matter of seconds. The social media is a technological advance that has had a significant impact on people’s lives, but it has also been addictive for some people.

Many people, mostly the young, use the social media like a tool to express their opinions, feelings, beliefs, likes, and to meet new people as well. This causes users to spend hours in front of a screen using social media like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and many others. As a result, some become addicted to it. This addiction to the social media causes difficulties for some to interact with other people in real life because they have not had much experience in face-to-face interactions. This can have negative effects on relationships and future jobs because they do not know how to talk with another person face to face.

It is always good to do our best. Further, it is good when we are flexible about things that are challenging in life. Sometimes we work hard and sometimes we do things that make us happy. However, one thing I believe is that you are what you do, not what you say you are going to do.

Norma A. Lugo Alvarado, Mexico, ESOL Grammar V

My mother was a very submissive woman, and she had worked tirelessly to raise her children. She has inspired me to work hard and to have a passionate heart in order to achieve my goals. Her sacrifice and dedication for the family has taught me to never give up on my dreams despite hardships. I believe in the passionate and determined heart of women to accomplish any goals. Although my mother wasn’t able to read or write, she always encouraged us to attend school because she did not have the opportunity to finish elementary education.  In addition, she taught me to take advantage of opportunities in order to improve my education.  In the same way, I have read some inspiring stories of people in similar situations who had to struggle to learn English.

Monica Dias, Brazil, ESOL Grammar V

I believe that the world turns in our favor when we chase our dreams. About five years ago, I visited America for the first time with my daughter. I felt a sudden happiness and desire to move to USA after seeing that we would have a much better life for both of us. When we were at Orlando’s airport, while I was waving goodbye to a friend that lives here, I told myself “I will come back”. Already in Brazil I searched all the possibilities to have a permanent visa but at that time I didn’t meet any of the conditions for a visa. It was an impossible dream.

I believe in willingness as the key to success in life. I lived in my hometown in Algeria for 22 years, and I was surrounded by women who tried every respectful job to make their life easier. They worked in fields to support their families.  And my mother was one of them.

When my mother was a child, she attended school in a city but her parents arranged her marriage and stopped her from education. Because of the society, people thought that their daughters were better off with men besides them. At that time, girls had to start families at an early age.

The social media is a technological advance that has had a significant impact on people but has caused a certain addiction, too.

This addiction causes difficulties to interact with other people in real life because they have little experience doing that. This can affect their relationships and future jobs because they do not know how to talk with another person face to face.

In my first year in the United States I experimented a lot of different feelings, but my smile and language came together very well. That is when I realized that we all smile the same language.

It was sad for me not to be around my family, people and friends when I came here. I was disconnected from them. I knew it was something more than love for my family that brought me here.  I believe I came here to mark something different for my family. I remember when I left Cuba I had this big smile on my face to make myself a little stronger when saying good bye to my parents. We couldn’t say many words that day. Our language was more of a simple smile for a “good bye.”

Maria Rendon, Ecuador, ESOL Grammar V

I am 43 years old. Every day I say I am here. I am here for my family, friends or anyone who needs my help. I am grateful for having a Job and helping at home. Sometimes, there are good and bad days, but we have to continue with our lives. I believe in smiling and giving the best of ourselves because we will be rewarded someday. In this world we are surrounded by good and bad people. We can find them at work or even in our families. However, my character does not let me be a bad person.

Lina Corozco, Colombia, ESOL Writing V

I believe that treating others with respect could make this world better. Nowadays, people get angry easily, and I believe that the lack of respect is a social problem. I have seen cases where people fight because they did not respect other opinions or points of view. As humans, we have different opinions, and everyone has reasons to follow his or her ideas, which is totally understandable.  The lack of respect is making the world worse. I believe that people can have a conversation and debate a subject without being aggressive or offensive.
